Step-by-step protocol:

  1. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root.
  2. Rinse quickly with milk, saline, or clean water if dirty — do not scrub.
  3. Keep the tooth moist in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation kit.
  4. Attempt re-insertion only if it can be done gently and without pain.
  5. Call an emergency dentist immediately — ideally within 30–60 minutes.
  6. Permanent teeth may require splinting and follow-up root canal treatment.
    Note: Do
    not re-implant baby teeth.

1️⃣ Act Quickly – Time is Critical

  • Ideal re-implantation time: within 30–60 minutes after the tooth is knocked out.
  • The chance of saving the tooth drops significantly after 2 hours.

2️⃣ Handle the Tooth Properly

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (the visible chewing surface), not the root.
  • Avoid touching or scrubbing the root — the periodontal ligament cells are fragile.

3️⃣ Rinse if Dirty

  • If the tooth is dirty, quickly rinse it with milk, saline, or tap water for no more than 10 seconds.
  • Do not scrub or use soap/chemicals.

4️⃣ Keep the Tooth Moist

  • Preferred storage: use milk in glass cup drop tooth in
  • Alternative: place the tooth in saliva (inside your cheek) if milk isn’t available.
  • Do not let the tooth dry out.

5️⃣ Reposition if Possible

  • If the patient is conscious and able, gently try to reinsert the tooth into its socket:
  • Hold by the crown
  • Push gently into the socket
  • Bite on a clean cloth to keep it in place

Only attempt this if it can be done without pain or force.

6️⃣ Immediate Dental Care

  • Call your emergency dentist immediately — e.g., Dr. Castellano at 813‑672‑1917.
  • Bring the tooth in its storage solution.
  • Treatment may include:
  • Local anesthesia
  • Re-implantation
  • Splinting to stabilize the tooth
  • Antibiotics if needed
  • Follow-up for root canal treatment (commonly required for permanent teeth)
  • root canal usually necessary

A knocked-out tooth is a true dental emergency. Handle by the crown, keep it moist, and get to an emergency dentist as fast as possible — ideally within an hour.”
